Business Management
You do not have to hold a college degree in Business Administration to understand some of the basics of managing your small business.
Business Plan
Remember your business plan? Yes, that frustratingly formal and stuffy document you prepared just because you were told you should, or because you thought it would help getting a loan from the bank? That business plan should never be allowed to go out of style, so to speak. It was written with the future of your business in mind and it can function as your right-hand assistant. Refer to your business plan when it seems as though you are being pulled in a thousand different directions. Stick to the plan. Should you decide you want to change course, make amendments to the first plan, but always have a plan. There are very few great inventions and magnificent structures in the world that were not preceded or accompanied by countless renderings and drawings.
Dealing With Employees
At some point in your business, you will most likely deal with at least one or two employees, perhaps many. How you manage employee relations is critical to your business’ success and bottom line. Be sure you take the time to train employees to their jobs, making sure they know what is expected of them and how important their role is to your business.
Learn how to motivate your employees. By motivating and giving them goals to work towards including the possibility for future growth with your company, you also work at retaining them. Interested and engaged employees who feel appreciated and challenged will often deliver. However, there are bound to be bad apples. Do not feel discouraged when you let an employee go. Bad employees can seriously harm your business and take others along with them.
Marketing and Advertising
How are you marketing your business? Has it been word of mouth? Do you have a well-maintained website? Can customers find you easily? With all the variety of advertising and media available today it is surprising how many small businesses still claim they do not have the time to spend on advertising schemes or updating websites. Businesses should have websites. A website is one of the most accessible means to advertising that has a potential market of millions if done correctly. If you do not know the proper way to build a website for business, hire a professional. Make sure the web designer has a knowledge of both good design and usability, combined with effective web marketing techniques as well.
