Business Finance
You have a great business idea, but you need to find the money to do it. Where do businesses get their start-up capital? Where do they find those wealthy investors?
Finance Terms
Here are some business finance terms that crop up even in everyday media that might help in understanding the business of financing small business:
Return On Investment, ROI. This is an industry biggie. The return on investment essentially is a measurement of what you earn from your business based on what you put into it in the first place—the return on your initial investment. Business owners want a return greater than their investment in order to be successful.
Fixed Assets are the pieces of your business, like vehicles, business machines and systems such as printers, copiers and computer networks, buildings and storage, among many other items. These assets are the resources that are critical to conducting your business. In lending terms, fixed assets have a valuation associated with them.
Working Capital is a figure associated with the liquidity of your business. It is often figured as your business assets, minus what your business owes, equals your working capital, or something similar.
Finding Money
Honestly, many small business owners of sole proprietorships ante up a good deal of their own start-up money hoping that the business will turn a profit. They take out second mortgages on their home, sell their car or boat, cash in IRAs and 401(k)’s, all in hopes of being successful. For many people, this is the easiest thing to do given the fact that many banks and lenders are often hesitant to loan to new start ups with sole owners.
Banks
Sole proprietorships, or partnerships, too, come bundled with owner liabilities. Also, many banks sometimes doubt the integrity and earning potential of some businesses. All the more reason to have a well prepared and professional business plan. Business plans can help you get the financing you need by exhibiting good business analyses and well informed business concepts and plans for providing for future growth.
Finance Companies
Finance companies are becoming increasingly popular lenders to ask for small business financing. Whereas banks have strict lending rules to which they must adhere, finance companies often have more latitude in negotiating loans and lines of credit.
Angel Investors
Angel investors are what the wealthy philanthropic investors are generally called. Find an angel investor suited to your business sector and you might have found a financial friend for life. Many online sources can point to Angels and other types of investment options, too.
